Frequently asked questions.

Common questions about how EmberMate works.

Will my data ever be uploaded?

No. EmberMate stores all data locally on your phone, encrypted at rest. We don't operate a server for your health data — there's nothing to upload it to. No analytics, no third-party tracking, no cloud sync.

The only network requests EmberMate makes are App Store update checks. Your medication list, vitals, notes, and patient information never leave your device.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Because EmberMate stores everything locally, your data lives wherever your phone lives. We strongly recommend keeping your device's standard backups enabled — iCloud Backup on iPhone, or Google One Backup on Android. EmberMate's data is included in those system backups, so restoring to a new device brings everything back.

We can't help you recover data from a lost or wiped device. There's no copy on our end.

Can I share data with another caregiver?

Yes — through exported PDFs. The Visit Prep / Care Report feature lets you generate a printable summary of medications, vitals, symptoms, and what changed, then share it via email, message, AirDrop, or print. This is the recommended way to keep family members or healthcare providers in the loop.

Live multi-caregiver sync (a "Care Circle" feature) is on the roadmap but requires significant additional security and compliance work. We'd rather build it carefully than ship it fast.

Does EmberMate work without internet?

Yes. Logging, viewing history, generating Visit Prep PDFs, and reviewing trends all work offline. EmberMate only uses the network for App Store updates.

Is EmberMate HIPAA-compliant?

HIPAA is a U.S. law that applies to healthcare providers, insurers, and their business associates. EmberMate is a personal tracking tool used by individual caregivers — it's not a covered entity, so HIPAA doesn't technically apply.

That said, the protections we offer are stronger than what HIPAA would require for a covered entity. Your data never leaves your device. There's no third-party access. There's no analytics. We can't see, share, or sell your information because we don't have it. If you're tracking care for someone in a clinical setting and need a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement, EmberMate isn't the right tool — but for personal caregiving use, it offers more privacy than most HIPAA-compliant platforms.

How is this different from Apple Health or Google Fit?

Apple Health and Google Fit track your data — your steps, your heart rate, your workouts. They're built around the person holding the phone.

EmberMate tracks the person you're caring for — and the experience of caregiving itself. It's designed around the caregiver's reality: short attention windows, mid-task logging, the specific questions a doctor will ask at the next appointment, the small changes you want to remember to mention to your siblings. It's a different shape of tool because it's built for a different kind of work.
